We are delighted that after months of essential repairs St Twrog’s, Bodwrog on Anglesey is open for visitors.
“It was a hot sunny day, the sky was intensely blue, and there were wonderful views of the Anglesey landscape and the mountains of Eryri and Llyn. The hedges were a mass of hawthorn blossom, and the churchyard was full of bluebells and campion.”
This is part of a message we received from a member who visited St Twrog’s, Bodwrog on Anglesey last weekend – immediately after we re-opened the church. We are delighted that St Twrog’s is now open daily for visitors.
The church recently came into our care after it was closed for regular worship. We’ve spent the past 7 months mending the roof, overhauling the rainwater goods and the below ground drainage. We’ve repaired the glazing to the windows, raked out the cementitious pointing, and repointed the external masonry in lime mortar. The biggest job has been to address the intensely damp conditions internally. So intense, that the timber panelling had turned to mush in places, the walls were green and sprouting tufts of grass, and the floor structure was rotten to oblivion. All of this has been addressed, and the interior redecorated. Mostly. If you visit, you will see that the new plaster on south internal wall is not finished – given how damp the walls were and the rainy start to 2025, it’s taking this wall a while to “go off” – for the plaster to harden enough to be receive a topcoat of plaster and some paint. We hope you will excuse this – we wanted to get the church open for the summer. And will be back to finish the south wall as soon as possible.
Our sincere thanks to the team – Natural Building Centre, Tim Ratcliffe Associates, Andrew Davidson and Ashley Pengelly. And of course, to our members and donors whose generosity funded this work.
