gently.snowy.baronessWith its curious, truncated, double gable, this Georgian chapel built in golden Cotswold stone is unforgettable. Founded in the early 1700s, the interior retains a full set of wood-grained box pews, a U-shaped gallery, a pulpit with a subtle sunburst pattern in the woodwork and a lead-lined full immersion baptism font.
The site was acquired in 1703–1704 by a group of worshippers who previously met at Longworth on the other side of the Thames. In the 1750s, the chapel was enlarged, or more probably rebuilt, to its present size. In 1859, the interior furnishings were moved around, the pulpit was removed from the south to the west wall, and ample seating was provided in box pews.
Cote Chapel is a relative rarity; it one of only 29 Grade II* Baptist chapels in England.
Between 1996 and 2025, the chapel was in care of the Historic Chapels Trust. Due to financial issues, the HCT had to wind up its operations. The Friends of Friendless Churches have taken on the building in spring 2025.
