Last September, the doors of St Peulan’s, Llanbeulan on Anglesey shut whilst we undertook some vital repairs to this noble old church. The conservators from the Natural Building Centre (NBC) have done a tremendous job, and we are delighted that the church is open to visitors once more.
We started with re-roofing the north side of the nave roof. We stripped the failed render off the west gable, raked out the impervious cement pointing, and dubbed out the wall in lime mortar. We left this for about six months, before going back and to apply a coat of roughcast (harling) render.
Anyone who has been to St Peulan’s will know that in places, the flagstones have a bright green algal finish… this is due to the defective drainage, which is currently funnelling water into the building, rather than away from it… With Andrew Davidson of Gwynedd Archaeological Trust overseeing the excavation, the NBC team laid a new drainage system.
In addition, the leaded lights have been repaired, cracked lintels stitched, and the interior has had a badly-needed lick of limewash!
We're delighted to have been able to undertake these much-needed repairs. Now, we're on to the next project: St Beuno's, Penmorfa. More soon!
With thanks to the team:
We will shortly have some proper photos of the finished article, which we will share with you.
